A-10 aircraft have been proposed to be used as air tankers. It is argued that the retired aircraft could be refurbished with 2,000 gallon water/retardant tanks. Their maneuverability would make them ideally suited for maneuvering in the passes and canyons of California. However, employees of the California Dept. of Forestry have pointed out that the U.S. government hasn't put any of retired A-10 aircraft up for sale. Other drawbacks are that because the aircraft armor can not be removed, without the weight of the 30 mm cannon in the front, the aircraft would be severely out of balance, a 2,000 gallon tank would make the aircraft severely overweight.
We received the following email from Mr. Ed Herlik (patriotsfund @ aol. com)
"Good Evening, I stumbled on your A-10 FireHog page. I held the patent on this idea.
The real problem, though, is quoting the CDF: "However, employees of the California Dept. of Forestry have pointed out that the U.S. government hasn't put any of retired A-10 aircraft up for sale."
They wouldn't be purchased, they'd be government supplied equipment. 'Sale' was a smoke screen they used to protect their bureaucracy.
"Other drawbacks are that because the aircraft armor can not be removed, a 2,000 gallon tank would make the aircraft severely over weight."
Total BS. After stripping out the gun and other systems, the fully loaded FireHog would have been 4,000# below it's max weight. And it would have had better engines; it would have seriously outperformed the military version.
- With the best retardant delivery system devised so far.
- With aerial reloading so they didn't have to land to refill.
- With UV wildfire early detection.
- With IR vision, allowing deliveries at night and inside smoke clouds.
- With a computer bomb sight for accuracy.
- With the ejection seat.
CDF leaders actively resisted this proposal in the '90s. Turned out some of them made money on keeping thing like they were and finally got legally hammered for that (and other crap like flying government planes for private business). But it was too late. California got stuck with the S-2T. How's that working out for them?
I suggest you update your site."
A Fire Hog Air Tanker RC airplane may be just the ticket for people who want a high visibility paint scheme on their rc airplane.
GWS has an A-10 ARF that could be converted into a Fire Hog. It is EDF powered by 2 GWS EDF 55 fans with S 300 brushless motors. Wingspan is 38 in. and length is 34 in.
