Officially established in 1961, the Frecce Tricolori fly nine aircraft in team formation and a single aircraft demonstrates as a solo. No other military flight demonstration team flies such a large number of aircraft.The team carries out the tradition of numerous Italian aerobatic teams dating back into the 1920’s. They have performed over 2,000 times throughout the world and are still performing to this date.
On August 28, 1988, while performing before a crowd of about 300,000 people at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, a Frecce Tricolori MB-339 aircraft struck two other aircraft in the formation sending them plummeting into the crowd. It resulted in the death of three of their pilots and 76 people in the crowd. An additional 346 people were seriously injured.
