The Ilyushin IL-2 was the backbone of Soviet anti-tank and ground attack units of World War II. It had massive integrated armor which protected all aircraft vital parts and formed a cocoon to protect its pilot.
Two forward firing high velocity cannons were the standard weapons of the Ilyushin IL-2. The aircraft had bomb bays which could carry up to 192 anti-tank bombs. Grenade launchers on board could fire small mines suspended from parachutes which could be dropped in the path of pursuing fighters.
When first deployed in 1941, the IL-2 was produced with a single seat. In 1942, a second crew member, manning a 12.7 mm machine gun from the rear cockpit, was added to give protection against attacking fighters.
The ground attack aircraft played a key part in the Soviet counter attack at Stalingrad. They flew over 1,000 sorties against German ground forces. At Kursk, they virtually wiped out all German tanks and artillery.
The Ilyushin IL-2 is the most produced military aircraft in history, with over 36,000 of all types built.
