The MiG-29, produced by Mikoyan, is a Russian air superiority fighter that first flew in 1977. It remains one of the premier fighter planes of today.

Terms such as light weight, extremely capable, high performing and highly maneuverable are often used to describe the aircraft.

The MiG-29 is one of the most popular aircraft of Russia and one of the main fighters of the Indian Air Force.

The aircraft features unfinished landing strip capability enabling it to operate closer to front lines.

The radar system of the MiG-29 is capable of simultaneously engaging up to ten enemy aircraft at distances of up to 150 miles. Also present is the ultra high resolution tracking of ground targets enhanced with look down, shoot down capability.

A helmet mounted system allows missile tracking that is directed by the pilot's line of sight.

The latest version of the MiG-29 is designated the MiG-29M/M2.   It is reported that its airframe has been strengthened and that it has received new engines.  The new engines weigh about the same as the original RD-33 engines while having full digital engine control for faster throttle response, plus additional thrust.

Also new is a fly-by-wire system, updated avionics and a Zhuk-ME pulse-Doppler radar, said to present additional range and higher resolution than the previous radar system.

MiG-29 aircraft have been seen performing at air shows since 1986.

India used the MiG-29 as a bomber escort over Kargil and to counter encroachment into Indian air space by Pakistani aircraft.

The Yugoslavian Air Force MiG-29 was used against NATO aircraft in 1999 resulting in the loss of a number of aircraft.

The MiG-29 served with the German Air Force from 1988 through 2003.

Poland has employed the most MiG-29 aircraft of any NATO country since 2003 with a total of 44 aircraft.  Of these, 31 are still deployed.

The United States purchased a total of 21 MiG-29 aircraft from Moldova in 1997 under international treaty. They were carefully evaluated and now many reside at museums and exhibits throughout the United States.

The Russian Air Force has some 600 MiG-29 aircraft deployed. In addition, some 1,000 MiG-29 aircraft of all types have been exported throughout the world.
