SPAD XIII

SPAD XIII

SPAD XIII aircraft are often regarded as the best French fighter aircraft of World War One. SPAD stands for Societe Pour L'Aviation et ses Derives.

Initially the aircraft was equipped with either a 150 hp or 180 hp Hispano-Suiza engine. Late production aircraft had a 220 hp engine

The first successful SPAD XIII flew in 1916. Its strong wings and airframe permitted it to dive at higher speeds and with greater control than other aircraft of its time.

After a few test flights the SPAD XIII was put into production. It was deployed in September 1916 and immediately entered combat.

SPAD XIII aircraft were introduced in answer to larger, more powerful, and more heavily armed German aircraft. Until they were introduced, French fighter aircraft were armed with only a single machine gun.

French aces Fonck, Guynemer and Nungesser all flew the SPAD XIII. In addition to France, the aircraft was used by Great Britain, Belgium, Italy, Russia and the U.S.

The SPAD XIII became the premier aircraft of the Escadrille Lafayette, an American pilot squadron attached to the French. Eventually the aircraft was transferred from the French to the American Expeditionary Force Air Service. One of the American's most famous pilots who flew the aircraft was World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker.

A total of some 8,500 of the aircraft were produced.
