Don Stits designed the Stits Baby Bird airplane during 1980. The world's smallest aircraft is a high wing monoplane powered by a 55 hp engine.

Another miniature airplane was designed by Don's father, Ray. The model was a biplane design. It was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's smallest biplane from 1952 until 1984.

The Stits Baby Bird was a family project. Lori, Don's wife, and their two children all participated in the building of the airplane. Materials used in the construction of the airplane model were a fuselage made of steel tubing with wings made of wood.

Harold Nemer, a retired U.S. Navy pilot, made pre-flight tests on the Stits Baby Bird once construction was completed in mid-1984. A number of taxi tests showed its readiness for flight, and the Stits Baby Bird first flew on August 25, 1984.

Harold Nemer was the pilot in all 35 flights that the Stits Baby Bird aircraft completed through 1989. It was then that the Baby Bird was donated to the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, WI where it is now on display.

The Stits Baby Bird has been in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "Smallest Airplane in the World" since 1984.

    I do not think this should hold the record. It never did more than straight flights whereas all other record holders could fly circuits.
