Transall C-160

Transall C-160

The Transall C-160 is a military cargo transport that first flew in 1963. It was flown primarily by France, Germany, South Africa and Turkey.

Transall C-160 aircraft were the primary French military air cargo transport.  They provided support to French bases in sub-Saharan Africa. German Transall C-160 aircraft have been used for peace keeping missions over Sudan. The aircraft were used to support the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. Transall C-160 aircraft have been deployed on numerous missions around the world to areas including Bosnia, Chad, Ethiopia, Lebanon and Mauritania.

The aircraft has been used for a variety of missions in addition to the transport of troops and cargo. Its military roles include aerial refueling, communications and reconnaissance and civil aviation roles as an air ambulence and mail carrier.

Transall C-160 aircraft are capable of flying from unimproved runways due to their heavy duty landing gear. Special flaps with dual slots, propellers with reverse pitch, and effective spoilers, enable short take offs and landings.

The manufacturer began designing the Transall C-160 in 1959. It was first deployed in 1967. The last airplane to be built left the factory in 1987. Through the years the airplane has been updated and improved. These improvements have included new avionics, strengthening the wings, and increased fuel capacity.

In April of1976, the French Air Force employed Transall C-160 aircraft by transporting troops in support of the Zaire government during Operation Verveine.

In May of 1978, French Transall C-160 aircraft dropped French Foreign Legion paratroopers in support of the Zaire government during the Battle of Kolwezi.

From 1987 through 1990, Transall C-160 aircraft of the South African Air Force were used for the transportation and supply of troops in southern Angola during the South African Border War.

In 1991, a French Transall C-160 was used both during and after the Gulf War to enforce the no-fly zone over Iraq.

In January of 2012, French and German Transall C-160 aircraft participated in Operation Serval, France's involvement in the Mali Civil War.

By the end of 2012 all South African Transall C-160 aircraft were retired from active service.  The aircraft in the French Air Force have been withdrawn from deployment beginning in 2018.  The German and Turkish Air Forces plan to operate their Transall C-160 aircraft through 2021.

A total of 214 Transall C-160 aircraft were manufactured.

Pictured above is the good looking RC Transall C-160 from Flair Models built by RC Don. The ARF has a 72 in. wingspan, is 53 in. long, and weighs around 6 lbs. For power it uses .25 two cycle or .26 four cycle engines.

The RC Transall C-160 from GWS has with a wingspan of 44 in. and a length of 33 in. The ARF is available with or without EDP 300 HA motors. All up weight is about 20 oz.

Huawei has a RC Transall C-160 with a 44 in. wingspan and 32 in. length.  It uses 2208 - 1800 kV motors for power and weighs around 21 oz.
